Gekko News - Gamecube Emulator for Windows

Shizzy posted this news on the Gekko site:

As we are in the process of preparing the next closed beta release (N'Sider), we have decided it would be best for the project to expand our team to include new programmers. The emulator, although very far along in development, is still at a stage where there are many areas of emulation that have yet to even be touched, and the areas that have been worked on are still very incomplete and lacking features. It is simply a lot of work to keep up with with only two developers.

If you are interested in contributing to the project, please let us know what section of the project you are interested in working on (although you will not be limited by this), and your relevant programming experience. If we feel that you will be an asset to the team, we will then welcome you and provide you will all developer access. :-) Any inquiries or questions can be sent to me via forum PM. It's a great opportunity to join a very motivated team (I speak for both the developers, testers, N'Siders, and everyone else part of the project) and a very great community.

In addition, we are looking to enhance the website design. If you have interest in this, and experience, please feel free to contact me as well.

Thank you!
Eric

Mame4all Wiz - Mame for Wiz Released

Franxis has posted a beta release of his MAME Emulator for the Wiz:

Preliminary version of MAME4ALL for the Wiz:
http://www.talfi.net/gp32_franxis/mame4all_wiz.7z

Instructions:
- Download and install MAME4ALL for the Gp2x.
- Remove old files in the 'frontend' folder.
- Overwrite the Gp2x executables with the Wiz ones.
- Try it.

It is based in the last version of MAME4ALL for the Gp2x (1.6). It has almost everything working...

Limitations:
- Only 22 khz sound seems to work correctly.
- If the emulator doesn't reach 100% of speed, the sound is choppy (i haven't been able to run the sound thread and synchronization code, the sound is updated in the MAME thread). Performance hit.
- Several code is also not optimal, to be improved.
- For now the performance is almost the same as the gp2x one, to be improved.

Gpfce 0.4 For Wiz - Nes Emulator for Wiz

Orkie has posted a new version of the Nes Emulator for the Wiz:

Hooked it up to libcastor and got it playing nicely with some advice from Pickle on how to build it. Slight tearing because I haven't got any kind of double buffering in libcastor yet (though I did get wait for vsync working earlier, so at least half of my objectives for 0.3 have been met ).

Download: http://x11.gp2x.de/openwiz/gpfce-wiz.tar.bz2

And this is why I don't do videos of my stuff (for one thing, my camera can't record sound): http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=V4vdotGcAjc

Helping With News

Hi all, recently you have noticed that im helping out here with news, whilst the forums are always active the front page has been dead, now i only stick with console news because on DCEmu thats what i post about ( Console Emulation, Homebrew, Gaming and Hardware News) but i know theres much more news missing, now until theres more newsposters if anyone wants to help i have a news submission forum on DCEmu for ay emulation news to be submitted.

I can then quickly copy and paste here on Emu64

So if you have news you want on here, then please submit here --> http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=117

TI83 Emulator 22/01/09 released - TI83 Emulator for GBA

Dwedit has popped up with a new version of his TI83 Emulator for GBA, heres the release notes:

Here is a Multiboot version of the TI83 emulator.
If you trim the TI83 rom, the file size of the rom is about 215900 bytes large.
You can also attach a .83G file up to about 14000 bytes large, and use L+R to send it.

If the GBAMP firmware refuses to boot the file, use the PocketNES firmware instead.

Edit: Using Pocketnes firmware to run the emulator may be buggy. It crashed when I tried sending a game to the emulator. Using GBAMP's firmware didn't boot the emulator at all for me.

Dolphin SVN build 1943 - Gamecube/Nintendo Wii Emulator for Windows

Dolphin the Gamecube/Nintendo Wii Emulator for Windows has had a new public beta release, heres the news details:

Also, ector was able to fix the crashing issues from the last few public builds. Its been fixed. This build should be a lot more stable. More notes on config changes and added visual options for wiimote. So go grad r1943 and get testing and let us know in the forums. On a side note. Nakee hasn't been around today so I posted the win32 build. I can not make a win64 or linux builds. When they are done and ready they will be posted under the downloads.

UPDATE 20/01/2008 By Daco: i added the 64bit build :)

I've released version 6 today.

It has two user-visible features:

- A virtual keyboard that can be used to do the key bindings and type stuff
- When loading files from d64 disks, zero-sized files are skipped. This allows some more games to load with LOAD "*",8,1. You would have got "File not found error" for these cases before.

There are also some small bug fixes and quite a bit of internal restructuring, but you have to look at the sources to see that :-)

PCSX2 Playground SVN609 - PS2 Emulator for Windows

Krakatos has posted a nnew version of the PS2 emu for Windows and new plugins too:

OK, new beta posted. This is mainly a bugfix release for beta 599, to solve the most serious bugs. Still Vtlb only, Vuskip still doesn't work. I am removing 599 since as said this is a bugfix release.

Also, while I'm at it, I added to the first posts the plugins included into the playground svn as they are today. Don't expect great improvements, but you may as well use them. Be sure to reconfigure from scratch, delete the ini files. The plugins included are:
Linuzappz
Zerogs
Spu2ghz
Zerospu

Changelog since beta 599:
- major bugfix from rev 595. Solves Mgs3 crash and bios problems, may have been responsible for other quirky behaviours
- some hackfixes for Fatal Frame 1
- removed a typo in memory.cpp
- a few small optimizations tweaks
- a few small vumicro changes

Known issues:
Vuskip is still broken, frameskip may be quirky but seems fine for now

SMS Plus PSP 1.2.55 released

Uberjack has released a new version of his Master System/Game Gear emulator for the PSP, heres whats new:

SMS Plus PSP now includes the Time Rewind feature I mentioned earlier. To enable it, map any button to ‘Special: Rewind’. The feature alone takes up 85% of PSP’s memory, and I’m unsure what ramifications this might have for certain configurations, but if you come across problems, let me know.

Approximately 20 seconds of recent gameplay is saved, and saving is done once every five frames.

Fuse v2 - Spectrum Emulator for Nintendo Wii

Björn Giesler has released a new version of Fuse for the Nintendo Wii, heres the release details:

Fuse is the Free Unix Spectrum Emulator by Philip Kendall, an emulator for the Sinclair ZX Spectrum, a home computer that was very popular in the 80s.

Snapshot 2
Pretty much untouched port created by Björn, but rebuilt against the Fuse 0.10.0.2 (list of changes here)
Changed the way menu is navigated, now it's navigated using Wii Remote in horizontal position, just like in emulation
Fixed toggling the checkboxes in the options - press Right on Wii Remote to toggle the option
This snapshot has been compiled with zlib, so the application now supports .tzx and .rzx

Hatari 18/01/09 - Atari ST emulator for Wii

yohanes, the author of Wiiapple, has released a port of Hatari for the Wii, an Atari ST emulator. The Wiimote can be used as Mouse, there is currently no Atari Joystick support.

Heres the full release info:

After wiiapple, here is an atari st emulator for Wii based on hatari. This port works fine on my Wii. Two other people have tested it, one (Da_Gper) said it is very slow on his Wii, but Nowhereman said it is fine in his Wii. So please tell me you test result. If it works fine for most people, I will post it to wiibrew.

Some notes

You will need USB keyboard to use this emulator
Mouse is emulated using Wiimote (A for click), you can also use USB Mouse
Press F12 to access the menu (probably i should assign one of the Wiimote key for this),
Options can be saved to disk
Press home, or alt-q to quit
Floppy images can be placed in hatarifd
EmuTOS image have been included. With EmuTOS ROM, the green screen flickers a lot. It doesn’t happen with some real Atari ROMs that I tested.
Sound works (usually), jus enable it through the options

then today he also updated with this release:

I have made a stupid mistake by including wrong default configuration files (which is slow). I have updated the Atari ST emulator. Here is what is new:

- Wiimote only operation is possible. Not all things will work though. You can play point and click games that relies only on mouse. Press HOME to access the menu (change disk, change ROM, etc). To avoid wasting your time, you can test the game on Hatari for Windows/Linux to see if you can control everything using only mouse.

- I have included a simple flicker filtering to reduce the filtering. This is not the final solution to the problem. I will need to rewrite the SDL port to use GX.

Note:

- Mono mode still doesn’t work yet.

Scummvm news - Testing, testing

It is time to announce start of our pre-release testing. Next version of ScummVM is bringing you several new supported games as usual.

The games which were added are: Blue's 123 Time Activities, Blue's ABC Time Activities, Bud Tucker in Double Trouble and The 7th Guest. The procedure haven't changed, same as usual you need daily build of ScummVM, run through the games and submit any bugs you see along the way to the bug tracker. Once you complete the game, report on the forum post so the wiki page could be updated accordingly. We will need the version of the game, language, and platform.

Frodo Wii v5 - Commodore 64 Emulator for Ninntendo Wii

SimonKagstrom has updated his port of Frodo the Commodore 64 Emulator to the Nintendo Wii, heres whats new:

The most important changes are these (v4)

* Merge with Frodo CVS trunk and build FrodoSC instead of "plain" Frodo. This should improve emulation of some games, although not all.
* Save preferences together with the state when saving states. Useful e.g., to have game-specific key bindings
* Build with Yohanes version of libSDL. Perhaps that adds USB keyboard support, but I have no way of testing. Please fix the code if it doesn't work :-)
* Some key binding bugs fixed
* Some more menu options to control various things

V5 whats new

Anyway, you were right. The home button on the wiimote or the menu does bad things in this one. So, embarassingly enough, I've made a shiny new release, version 5!

This one contains the following feature:

* HOME button on the wiimote works again

And has removed the following feature:

- Untested USB keyboard support

Since that apparently broke HOME and/or the menu. For some wicked reason, it worked fine on the classic controller.

Open Emu - Game emulation for Mac OS X

Open Emu is an open source project to bring game emulation to OS X as a first class citizen, leveraging modern OS X technologies such as Cocoa, Core Animation and Quartz, and 3rd party libraries like Sparkle for auto-updating. Open Emu is based on a modular architecture, allowing for game-engine plugins, this means Open Emu can support a host of different emulation engines and back-ends while retaining a familiar OS X native front-end.

Currently Open Emu incorporates the following game engines as plugins:

Gambatte
adds support for Game Boy and Game Boy Color
CrabEmu

Open Emu also supports high quality scaling using Open GL, multithreaded video and audio playback as well as individual features and preferences per game engine, such as NTSC video signal emulation for the Nestopia Core.

ScummVM Announces Discworld Music Enhancement Project Completion

Some great ScummVM News, heres the details:

The developers of ScummVM are pleased to announce that as of today, the classic game Discworld has full support for James Woodcock's Music Enhancement Project within the developers build. The project started way back in January 2006 as James Woodcock committed himself to use the original MIDI files from various Point and Click Adventure titles, creating enhanced versions using modern MIDI equipment. He has already released the Simon the Sorcerer version and can now add Discworld to his completion list:

"I have tried very hard to remain faithful to the originals in respect to the excellent composers creations..." says James Woodcock, creator of the ScummVM Music Enhancement Project. He continues "...There has been a lot of support and interest from Discworld fans, who have been monitoring its progress very carefully and it is with great pleasure I can finally play Discworld using new versions of the original soundtrack with many thanks to the developers of ScummVM for all their hard work in making this feature possible".

James uses the Yamaha Tyros2 keyboard hooked up to his computer via USB and after going through various tweaking, recording and editing, a finalised music track is born.

With permission from legendary author Terry Pratchett himself, the Discworld enhanced soundtrack (version 2.0) will be released in full and compatible with ScummVM in the future when hopefully we expect the freeware version of the game will be made available to the public to enjoy all over again.

SMS Plus PSP to go back in time

Uberjack posted this news:

If you’re a fan of classic console emulators on PSP, you have no doubt heard of DaveX — he’s well-known for his nifty mods for emulators like NesterJ, and most recently, PicoDrive. These mods are the time rewind and mirror features, which rewind emulation (similar to Braid), and flip the screen horizontally.

Dave is responsible for the popular mod of SMS Plus PSP, and he recently agreed to let me use the time rewind code in the official distribution of the emulator, as well as any other emulators. Look forward to the next version of SMS Plus with this feature included.

Special thanks to Dave for the clever feature, and for agreeing to let me use it elsewhere.

ScummVM 0.13 rev35811 - ScummVM for Gamecube and Nintendo Wii

dhewg has released a new version of the port of ScummVM for the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo Gamecube, heres whats new:

rev 35811:
* Fixed the deadlock in newlib's fwalk(), this one was responsible for lockups in various games
* Enabled IHNM and SAGA2

ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables shipped with the games, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed!

Some of the adventures ScummVM supports include Adventure Soft's Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2; Revolution's Beneath A Steel Sky, Broken Sword 1 and Broken Sword 2; Flight of the Amazon Queen; Wyrmkeep's Inherit the Earth; Coktel Vision's Gobliiins; Westwood Studios' The Legend of Kyrandia and games based on LucasArts' SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) system such as Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max and more.

Frodo Wii V3 - Commodore 64 Emulator for Nintendo Wii

SimonKagstrom has updated his port of Frodo the Commodore 64 Emulator to the Nintendo Wii, heres whats new:

I've released version 3, which fixes the embarassing classic controller problem and some other issues. I simply went and bought one and tested it, and not everything worked as I thought :-) (Thanks also to the various people who reported problems with the classic controller)

A note about the speed: I've fiddled a bit more with that here, and the issue is (obviously) not that the Wii is too slow to emulate a C64. I think SDL_GetTicks() and/or SDL_Delay() behaves strange somehow, so I've replaced that particular part of the implementation. Speed is also configurable now.
